The warm days of summer are slowly giving way to the beauty of a Michigan autumn. The Rockford Chamber of Commerce (RCC) is preparing to welcome the season with Harvest Fest 2014. The event takes place Friday, Sept. 26 – Sunday, Sept. 28 and is filled with family-fun activities that carry a fall theme.
“Harvest Fest is an event where the business community really comes together,” said Linda Southwick, Executive Director of the RCC. “It is amazing how many sponsorships we receive supporting the numerous children’s activities we are presenting. We couldn’t have all the activities for Harvest Festival without the enormous support we receive with all the sponsorships. The reason it is so much fun for the community is because of the sponsors and we are so grateful. The non-profit organizations also come together on this weekend and help support the event, in addition to raising funds for their causes. Add on top of that the incredible volunteer support we receive and we are able to put together an action-packed weekend full of fall fun for all members of the family.”
The weekend will include many of the favorites of years’ past including the crowd favorites Chili Cook Off, Tractor Parade, Tractor Show, Beer Tent, Live Music, Museum Auction (live and silent), Rockford Rotary Barbecue, Rockford Lions Pancake Breakfast, Children’s Costume Contest, Coloring Contest, Kid’s Tractor Pull, Movies on the Rogue, Tours of the Little Red Schoolhouse and Trick or Treating.
The Classic Car Show is finding a new venue this year! Visitors can expect to enjoy more than 100 classic cars lining Main Street. This wonderful car show has always features a wide variety of makes and years, including some show-stopping entries. Awards are presented to the top 10 entries, and the “Best in Show.” This showcase not only features classic cars, it also features classic rock with a DJ setting the stage with cool music to listen to as you are looking at sweet rides.
Speaking of sweet rides, the Rockford Area Museum (RAM) will be hosting a LIVE auction beginning at 1 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 27 to auction off a 1937 SS100 Jaguar Replica called “The Duke.” This baby has a cherry red exterior with like-new soft tan removable top and sides! It rides on extra wide whitewall tires on spoke wire wheels and sports a real wood dash and instrument panel. Its original value is a cool $18,000!
The kids will be thrilled with all the activities geared toward their fun. Garden Club Park is the setting for a petting zoo, pony rides and Corner Bar Land – a dreamland of children’s games, a bounce house, and delicious food. They will also enjoy the costume contest, trick-or-treating, face painting and the tractor pull – and even a chicken chuckin’ contest.
Adults will enjoy the Rockford Brewing Beer Tent on Friday and Saturday, and in addition to the tasty craft brews, will be featuring some top local talent on their stage. There is a complete line up Friday night starting at 6 p.m. and all day on Saturday starting at 2 p.m. Live entertainment will also be featured Saturday and Sunday on Garden Club Park Stage.
The Make It and Take It Scarecrow building will be featured in the dam overlook parking lot for three weekends, Sept. 27 & 28, Oct. 4 & 5 and Oct. 11 & 12.
“There are so many exciting things going on all three days,” concluded Southwick. “Families can come downtown, enjoy the beautiful fall weather, the outdoors and plenty of fun activities celebrating this great time of year.”
